We had problems with typing accuracy and speed on Nexus One from the get-go. At first, we though it was because we were not used to the Android keyboard. However, after four days the results are pretty much the same, with only moderate improvement.

We used the same typing technique on the Nexus One as on the iPhone: either holding the phone in the palm of your hand and typing with one thumb, or holding it with two hands and typing with both thumbs.

Google Nexus vs Droid vs iPhone 3GS vs Palm Pre: Total Cost of Ownership (Price Wars)

Since then, Google announced complete details about the Nexus (exemplar, superphone in Google speak) — specifically, that you could buy the phone unlocked directly from Google for a hefty US$529.99, or through T-Mobile for only US$179.99 plus a two-year contract. Which got us thinking: how do those numbers compare with the competition?

As you can see from the chart below, we did a total-cost-of-ownership comparison of the Nexus, Droid, iPhone, and Palm Pre — the current “must-have” handsets of T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, respectively. We looked at the phone cost with and without a two-year contract, as well as the monthly costs of both an average plan and one with unlimited calling/texting/data.

Once you get past the sticker shock of “I’m spending THAT much for phone service in twenty-four months?!?”, it turns out the Pre and Nexus have the lowest TCOO on the 450-500 minute plans. Now, while these are important factors to consider when getting that smart phone du jour, they’re not the only things to consider. Verizon’s higher total price, for instance, comes with a larger and more reliable network — AT&T, while having the single hottest phone (and a gazillion apps for it) recently admitted that yeah, their 3G network is still the pits in some locations. Likewise, the Pre’s attractiveness, both feature- and plan-wise, is tempered by lack of apps (yes, compare to other offerings)

If there were a “What the heck!” category in the iTunes App Store, Pocket Heat (available for $1.99) would live there.

Pocket Heat turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a portable heater by maxing out your iPhone CPU’s processing power. You can adjust the heat level by using an onscreen slider, which claims to alter the temperature and illuminates graphical “heating elements” on your display.
We would test this app, but frankly, we’re afraid to. While the iPhone includes safeguards to prevent serious overheating, Apple has previously issued a heat advisory for the iPhone 3GS. Apple’s own Knowledge Base states that the iPhone should be operated in a place where the temperature is between 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit–prolonged exposure to extreme heat will produce a temperature warning screen.

It is fairly difficult to do head-to-head tests between smartphones in a really scientific way, in most cases, but we can now be assured that the iPhone has the most accurate touchscreen in the land.

Trying to do a smartphone-to-smartphone competition quickly turns out to be an apples against googles, uh, I mean oranges, situation. Smartphones are at once so similar and so different that scientific comparisons break down quickly. People like one smartphone more than another based more on the total experience provided, rather than on individual features, which are often quite similar given their similar goals.

Therefore, it is at least semi-refreshing to see that at least one scientific test that can be fairly easily performed and that there is a clear winner. According to a PCWorld story, the Moto Development Group has tested the touchscreen accuracy of four leading smartphones, Nexus One, Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, and the Apple iPhone 3GS. In this test, the iPhone was the winner. This is important, according to Moto, because “When a manufacturer gets it right, the device tracks touch inputs almost as if they were connected to physical objects in the real world. Get it wrong and consumers end up with inferior touchscreen systems that are inaccurate, insensitive, and absolutely infuriating to use for typing.”

As nice as it is to see a test like this, and we hope that we will see many more, in isolation they mean very little. The only test that really matters is how the phones perform in the marketplace and that is a much more complicated matter than that of touchscreen accuracy, though the latter is a part of the former. From early indications, the Google Android phone seems to be the first new phone in quite a while to have most of the right factors to succeed in a big way in the marketplace. Still, they are going to have a long uphill struggle against the iPhone, the favorite of consumers and the Blackberry, still the darling of the corporate world.

The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology across 3G cell sites is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T’s network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with the best possible mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future. After full testing of HSPA 7.2 software, AT&T decided to expedite deployment of this initial upgrade, which will result in a better overall customer experience by generally improving consistency in accessing data sessions. The software upgrade also prepares the network for faster speeds and increases network efficiency.

The faster speeds, which are supported by the iPhone 3GS, will not be available to users, however, until AT&T upgrades its backhaul connections, which the carrier plans to do over the next two years. Backhaul upgrades are currently being performed in the carrier’s six test markets, with the faster HSPA 7.2 speeds being activated as infrastructure work is completed. The company anticipates that the majority of its 3G traffic will be shifted to HSPA 7.2 by the end of 2010, with the remainder following in 2011.

AT&T is also continuing to look beyond HSPA 7.2 to deployment of LTE (4G) beginning in 2011, which will offer even better performance for users.

The backhaul upgrades are also a key step in the evolution toward next-generation LTE mobile broadband technology. AT&T is designing its new backhaul deployments to accommodate both faster 3G and future LTE deployments. AT&T currently plans to begin trials of LTE technology this year, and to begin LTE deployment in 2011, matching industry time lines for widespread availability of compelling devices and supporting network equipment.

Google will be releasing their Nexus One aka Google phone today. Will Nexus One be an iPhone killer? The answer is no. Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky managed to get his hands on a Nexus One early, and posted his very detailed review up on Engadget. Go on and check it out, he did a good review of it. Joshua’s verdict is that the Nexus One is just another Android phone, and I’d have to agree with this judging by the videos and reviews I saw on the web. The iPhone will always win because of it’s simplicity!

No, the falling Apple logo on the Google hompage doesn’t have anything to do with Apple Inc. It is there to celebrate the birthday of Sir Isaac Newton. I believe this is the first time I’ve ever seen Google use an animated logo on their front page. I like it! Google is using javascript so the animation should work on most browsers. I tried it on my iPhone using the Safari browser and it does work!

To view the Isaac Newton Google Doodle on your iPhone just go to http://www.google.com and click View Google in: Classic. The homepage will come up and you will see the Apple logo falling down.

Who makes the iPhone? If you answered ‘Apple’, you’re wrong. The iPhone is a global effort. Tens of thousands of people at more than 30 companies on 3 continents work together to make Apple’s first phone possible.

Apple, of course, designs the product, and also created the single most important ‘component’ – the software that gives the iPhone its unique personality.

iPhone launch But, while Apple gets the credit, behind the scenes there are a host of other players, each of which has to build and deliver complex parts on schedule to make the iPhone possible.

Some of them are well known names, like US-based Intel, which supplies the NOR flash chips which hold the iPhone’s updatable system software; and Korea’s Samsung, which makes the video processor IC. Two famous names from consumer electronics, Japan’s Sharp and Sanyo Epson, are among the suppliers of the phone’s bright 3.5-inch display.
Unknown suppliers

Then there are the unknowns, each of which plays a small but vital role. Ever heard of Balda AG? Chinese factories owned by this German firm make the touch sensitive modules which are fixed onto the iPhone’s LCD to make its innovative multi-touch control possible. It’s also Balda’s technology which allowed Apple to switch to a tough scratch-resistant glass screen, to avoid the complaints over scratching that tainted the iPod Nano launch.

Another low profile firm, the UK’s Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR), is the creator of the iPhone’s Bluetooth module, in a deal that reportedly earns the integrated circuit design house $1.20 for each iPhone made.

You might have heard of the companies behind a few of the other iPhone chips – if you’ve ever wrestled with network driver installation on a PC. Marvell designs the WiFi chip, for example. Broadcom, best known for its networking chips, is the company behind the specialized interface chip that interprets the movement of your fingers on the multitouch screen.

While these chips are designed in Europe or the US, most of them aren’t made there. Instead they are rolling off production lines in Asia, from companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), undoubtedly the world’s biggest unknown chip maker, or its slightly smaller rival, United Microelectronic Corp (UMC) – both companies are based in Taiwan.

The distinctive aluminum and stainless steel iPhone case is also made by a Taiwanese firm, Catcher Technology, according to analysts in Taiwan.
Final assembly mystery

No matter where the iPhone’s myriad components are made, they all end up in one place: the factories of a lead contractor whose identity is now something of a mystery. Apple’s iPod manufacturing partner, Taiwan’s Foxconn, was long rumored to be the company that assembled the hundreds of components into a sleek iPhone. However, Foxconn’s CEO recently surprised investors by telling them that these reports were incorrect, according to Reuters. Another likely Taiwanese candidate, Quanta, is rumored to be working on the iPhone, but only on the next generation, so-called ‘iPhone 2.0′.

Analysts in Foxconn’s home base of Taipei however, still confidently list Foxconn International Holdings as the iPhone’s assembler, despite the company CEO’s apparent denial. Whoever the assembler is, it is there that the chips are planted onto printed circuit boards supplied by Taiwan’s Unimicron Technology Corp. Then all the components are fitted into the metal and plastic case to make a completed iPhone, ready for shipment to the US.
A second 3G iPhone?

During recent months, sources at a few of the component manufacturers named in this article have told regional media that Apple appears to be working on two different iPhone designs. The key feature attributed to ‘iPhone 2.0′ is 3G, as well as the GSM standard supported by the original iPhone. At least one of the smaller components suppliers has reportedly already delivered parts for this forthcoming product.
